In the History of Turkish Presidential Elections, there have been 17 elections since the establishment of Turkish Republic in 1923, electing 9 distinct Turkish citizens as president. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and İsmet İnönü were elected four times, Celal Bayar was elected three times, Cemal Gürsel, Cevdet Sunay, Fahri Korutürk, Turgut Özal, Süleyman Demirel, and Ahmet Necdet Sezer were each elected once. Kenan Evren became the president without an election.

  • First Election 1923-10-29
    158 of 281 MPs attended the election. All voted for Mustafa Kemal
  • Second Election 1927-11-01
    288 of 316 MPs attended the election. All voted for Mustafa Kemal
  • Third Election 1931-05-04
    289 of 317 MPs attended the election. All voted for Mustafa Kemal
  • Fourth Election 1935-03-01
    386 of 399 MPs attended the election. All voted for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk

  • First Election 1938-11-11
    348 of 399 MPs attended the election. All voted for İsmet İnönü
  • Second Election 1939-04-03
    413 of 429 MPs attended the election. All voted for İsmet İnönü
  • Third Election 1943-03-08
    435 of 455 MPs attended the election. All voted for İsmet İnönü
  • Fourth Election 1946-08-05
    451 of 465 MPs attended the election. İsmet İnönü was elected with 388 votes

  • First Election 1950-05-22
    453 of 487 MPs attended the election. Celal Bayar was elected with 387 votes
  • Second Election 1954-05-14
    513 of 541 MPs attended the election. Celal Bayar was elected with 486 votes
  • Third Election 1957-11-01
    413 of 610 MPs attended the election. All of them voted for Celal Bayar.

Was not elected. After the referendum for the 1982 constitution following his coup d'etat, he became head of state. Then he became president on November 7, 1982

His party did not have enough MPs to select him as a president. He also got support of MHP and SHP.[1]

Sadi Somuncuoğlu was another candidate.

[edit] Acting presidents

In the event of a temporary absence of the president on account of illness, travel abroad or similar circumstances, the speaker of the parliament serves as acting president, and exercises the powers of the president until the president resumes his functions, and in the event that the presidency falls vacant as a result of death or resignation or for any other reason, until the election of a new president.
