[edit] History
His Majesty's Theatre opened on Christmas eve 1904. The building, designed by architect William Wolfe and constructed by Gustav Liebe, is an example of Edwardian architecture. The theatre and adjoining hotel were built for 42,000 pounds in two years, amidst the gold boom early in the 20th century. [1]
Famous performers at His Majesty's Theatre include Dame Nellie Melba, Vivien Leigh, Sir Robert Helpman, Sir John Gielgud, Rex Harrison and Katharine Hepburn[2].
His Majesty's Theatre is home to the West Australian Opera and the West Australian Ballet.[2]
In 2004 the theatre had centenary celebrations and events - including the publications of David Hough's volume of history.
In 2006 His Majesty's Theatre, Perth, Western Australia became 'twinned' with His Majesty's Theatre in Aberdeen, Scotland.
