Hiroko Yakushimaru

Hiroko Yakushimaru (薬師丸 ひろ子 Yakushimaru Hiroko?, born June 9, 1964) is a Japanese actress and singer from Tokyo. Yakushimaru made her acting debut in the 1978 movie Yasei no Shomei. She has a minor role as young samurai in G.I. Samurai (1979). In 1981, she played the main role in Sailor Fuku to Kikanju, a movie based on a novel written by Jirō Akagawa under the same name, which pushed her up into stardom, as well as marking her debut in J-pop by singing the title song of the film. Her final J-pop release was on March 13, 1991. She has won four Japanese Academy Awards for 'Most Popular Performer', and won the 'Best Supporting Actress' award in 2006 for Always: Sunset on Third Street.
She married Koji Tamaki in January 1991, but they divorced in June 1998.
