Talk:Hippalus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As the better-known namesake of the other obscure topics, Hippalus the person should "own" the unmodified title, while the others get qualifiers. Stan 17:56, 31 Oct 2004 (UTC)

As a student of ancient history I fully agree ;-). But we might be prejudiced. When I tested this on Google, I found that most links pointed to the crater, not the person. Therefore I created the disambig page to preclude any fights between historians and astronomists. Paul 08:13, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Your thoughtfulness credits you, but one of the things to watch out for is that WP content is now being mirrored by hundreds of sites, so if for instance somebody makes up a list of craters and throws it into WP, without actually creating the crater article, all the mirrors will show up as hits. The astro folks have agreed to append "(crater)" to all of their creations, so as not to force hundreds of regular pages to made into disambigs, and as it happens this is one of those pages; I don't think you're going to get any fights, because the issue has already been resolved in a way that favors letting "Hippalus" by itself be about the person, with links from that article to things named after him. Again your remarks make sence. With pain in my heart (killing my first disambig page...) I moved all the info on Hippalus (navigator) back to Hippalus... creating yet another redirect page... Paul 17:39, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)
