[edit] European Network of Excellence on High Performance and Embedded Architecture and Compiler|Compilation
HiPEAC is a European Network of Excellence, funded under Framework Programme 6 and Framework Programme 7. The coordinators are Prof. Mateo Valero (UPC/BSC Barcelona) and Prof. Koen De Bosschere (Ghent University).
[edit] History
HiPEAC started in 2004 as a network of excellence in high-performance Embedded Architecture and Compilation. It steadily grew to a network joining more than 150 of Europe’s top researchers and since 2008 it broadened its scope to computing systems in general. It connects researchers from academic institutions, as well as large and small companies and high-tech start-ups.
[edit] Rationale for a computing systems network of excellence
Due to technology limitations, the design of computing systems is experiencing a radical shift towards parallelism through on-chip multi-cores and chip customization, leading to heterogeneous multi-core systems. Furthermore, the commodity market, the supercomputing market and the embedded market are increasingly sharing the same challenges, leading to convergence of the three markets. HiPEAC aims at coordinating the European research efforts in the domain of computing systems while this transition is taking place.
