Hinduism in Scotland

Hinduism in Scotland is of relatively recent provenance, with the bulk of Scottish Hindus having settled there in the second half of the 20th century. Some Scottish Hindus prefer not to be called 'Asians' [1] as this term is often used to refer to Scotland's Pakistani community, with which there is some friction. They make up approximately 1% of the Scottish population.

Scotland through British imperialism has had contact with Hindus since the 1600s.
Most Scottish Hindus are of Indian origin, or at least from neighbouring countries, such as Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. Many of these came after Idi Amin's expulsion from Uganda in the 1970s, and some also came from South Africa. There are also a few of Indonesian origin.
Many of these in turn are from the Punjab. Common languages amongst them, other than English include Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and Gujarati.
There are currently Hindu temples in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee. ISKCON aka "Hare Krishna" also operates out of Lesmahagow in South Lanarkshire.
