The Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) was established in 1988, and is the largest institution of higher learning in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with over 16,500 students. During the 2005 - 2006 academic year there were 9897 female and 6641 male students enrolled at 14 campuses throughout the country. More than 19,000 UAE nationals are graduates of the instititution.

The HCT provides post-secondary education in business, education, engineering technology, information technology, communications technology and health sciences.

The HCT places a strong emphasis on an innovative, project-driven and student-centred curriculum. English is used as the medium of instruction, with faculty recruited from around the world.

The HCT has formal alliances with a number of international tertiary education and training institutions, and corporate partnerships with local and multinational companies. Many courses have international accreditation: for example, the HCT's Bachelor of Education degree was developed with, and is certified by the University of Melbourne.

The CERT (Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training) is the commercial arm of the Higher Colleges of Technology, developing and providing education, training and applied technology for public and private sector clients.

The Chancellor of the HCT is His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, also UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The Vice Chancellor, appointed in June 2005, is Dr. Tayeb A. Kamali.

There are 18 campuses thoughout the country, with separate colleges for male and female students. The central administration of the HCT is located in Abu Dhabi.

[edit] Abu Dhabi Men's College

Abu Dhabi Men's College (ADMC) opened in in 1988 and has modern computer laboratories and technical workshops, and classrooms equipped with learning technology. ADMC offers a range of work-relevant programs in Business , Communication Technology , Engineering Technology , Health Sciences and Information Technology. Every years since 2001 the college successfully hosted the student-focused, international conference e-ducation Without Borders.

ADMC is located adjacent to the HCT's Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training (CERT).

[edit] Abu Dhabi Women's College

Abu Dhabi Women's College (ADWC) opened its doors in 1988 as one of the four founding campuses of the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT). ADWC has 5 main teaching departments: Business, Communication Technology, Education, Health Sciences and Information Technology. ADWC also seeks to meet the needs of women who were unable to enter college directly after high school by offering a Work Readiness Program that prepares them for successful careers in private, public or self-owned companies. The greater community is serviced by our Continuing Education programs which are open to everyone, regardless of gender or educational level.

These programs include courses in English, Business and Management and Information Technology. Courses may also be customized to meet the needs of organizations. The Director of the College is Dr. Bradley J. Cook.

Al Ain Men's College (AAM) was established in 1988 with 61 students and 19 staff.

The college operated from a temporary campus in the Al Ain suburb of Sarooj until 1996 when a purpose built facility was opened on the road to the suburb of Zakher, near Al Ain Zoo. Athletics and other recreational facilities were completed in 2001. The campus has attractive gardens and dramatic views of Jebel Hafeet.

The college offers courses in business, engineering and information technology. In 2006 there were more than 700 students and 90 staff. The current director is J. Brent Mills, who is also director of Al Ain Women's College.

Dubai Men's College (DMC) offers programs in Business, Information Technology, Communication Technology and Engineering and awards Diploma, Higher Diploma and Bachelors degrees. More than 3000 students have graduated from the college and it currently enrolls approximately 2000 students and employs some 200 faculty and staff. A new campus opened at Duabi Academic Cityin 2004 and is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies and a wide range of sports, educational and recreational facilities.

Dubai Men's College was opened in 1989 as part of the Higher Colleges of Technology. The college provides career-oriented education for UAE Nationals with an emphasis on creative and constructive thinking.

Graduate numbers increased from 21 in 1993 to 532 in 2005. DMC has awarded around 3300 graduation credentials. Many of those graduates has received more than one credential and they are employed and participating in the national workforce of the country.

Dubai Men's College offers more than 35 programs in different fields. Each program lasts between three to four years which leads to Diplomas and Higher Diplomas in the schools of Communication Technology, Engineering, Business and Information Technology. There is also Bachelor in Applied Science degree in Business Administration, Information Technology, Engineering Management, Construction Engineering and Communication Technology. These programs are geared to the needs of local business and industry and are benchmarked against international standards.

Program relevance is maintained with the participation of the Employer Advisory Committees for each program in the college. They meet twice a year to discuss the material of programs and needs of the industry in order to be incorporated in the program. The colleges are also developing affiliations with the tertiary educational institutions and validating bodies in other countries in order to maintain international program standards and to facilitate the transfer of HCT graduates to programs of advanced study abroad.

The Business Programs at Dubai Men's College include a Diploma, Higher Diploma, and a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree enabling graduates to meet the professional requirements of a bilingual business environment. Students develop life-long learning skills leading to a variety of business and management careers in local and international organizations within the UAE.

The Bachelor of Applied Science Degree programs is accredited internationally by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) in the USA.

The Communication Technology (Comm Tech) Programs provide students with a full range of practical and theoretical media studies courses. Graduates of this program are normally employable as media generalists. Students in the Comm Tech programs acquire knowledge and skills in Digital Media Production, Graphic Design, Multimedia, Portfolio Development, Project Management, Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Business Planning and Organization.

The Engineering Programs cover four areas of specialization offering Diplomas, Higher Diplomas and Bachelor of Applied Science Degrees in these areas. Engineering programs include:

  • Engineering Management

The Information Technology Programs at Dubai Men's College include Diploma, Higher Diploma and Bachelor of Applied Science Degrees in the following areas:

[edit] Dubai Women's College

Dubai Women's College offers post-secondary courses in business, information technology, health science, communications technology and education. It offers the only engineering program for women in the |HCT system – a higher diploma in software engineering. DWC also hosts a UNESCO Chair of Communication Technology and Journalism.


Over 2,900 UAE national women have graduated from the HCT's Dubai Women's College since it was established in 1989, with graduates going on to work at all levels in both the government and private sectors in Dubai and across the UAE.

Enrolment at the DWC campus has increased from less than 200 to over 2,200 students in 2006. DWC relocated to a new, purpose-built campus in the Al Quasis area of Dubai in 1998.

In keeping with all HCT campuses, DWC places a strong emphasis on an innovative, project-driven and student-centred curriculum. English is used as the medium of instruction, with faculty recruited from around the world.

Dr Howard Reed has been Director of Dubai Women's College since 1992. In 2005, he was appointed to the Dubai Education Council, established by then Crown Prince, now Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to improve the school education sector in Dubai.

[edit] Ras Al Khaimah Men's College

Ras Al Khaimah Men's College (RKM)was opened in 1993 and was the fourth college in the HCT (Higher Colleges of Technology) system to be opened after Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Al Ain. Originally, the college was located in Ras Al Khaimah city on the site presently occupied by George Mason University. In 2004 it moved to Digdaga, before moving back to the city to its current campus in 2006. The campus is located in an area of Ras Al Khaimah known as Bererat. It is situated roughly 5km from the city centre. Since its inception, the college has provided the community with almaost 1000 graduates.

As a technical college, its courses focus on preparing its students for the workplace. It offers a Bachelor's Degree in e-Business Management, as well as Higher Diplomas and Diplomas in three subject areas: Mechatronics, Business and Information Technology. The medium of instruction is English. The college maintains close links with local industry with many of its students gaining work experience with employers in the area. There is a Program Advisory Committee with representatives from local businesses and industry to advise the college on its courses. Many graduates have gone on to find employment with local employers such as Etisalat, ADNOC, ADGAS, HSBC and RAK BANK. Many have also found employment within government departments at both local and national level. The college also provides English programmes for the military on behalf of CERT (Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training).

Work Placement Students in their graduating year are required to participate in a work placement programme. The aim of the programme is to assess future career-related ambitions of students, and provide work experience to give them exposure to the field prior to their graduating and embarking on such a path

[edit] Facilities

The college is housed in a brand new campus in the east of the city. It has over twenty-five classrooms, in which every student has access to a networked computer. It is also equipped with a movie studio, and engineering workshop, and electronics and mechatronics laboratories. It has a well-stocked Learning Resource Centre (LRC) with more than 18000 volumes on site and an additional 500 000 available on Inter-college loan. It also offers its students an Independent Learning Centre (ILC) with audio-visual media, a cafeteria and a prayer room.

Currently, Ras Al Khaimah Men's College has approximately 500 students and is one of the smaller colleges in the HCT system. Its 36 faculty members come from all over the world, particularly the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The current director of both Men's and Women's College's is Dr. Ian Hall and the Dean of the Men's College is Mr. Ray LaBonte.

A New program that has been established recently is Bachelor of Applied Science in e-Business Management started in February 2007. The program started with 13 students, but this number has reduced to only 9 students
