Constantin Fasolt's scholarly The Limits of History (2003) greatly expands present-day knowledge of Conring. This highly original work of historiography aims at nothing less than bringing to light the unexamined preconceptions that have sustained history as a discipline since Conring's time, using Conring as a paradigmatic example. When considered in context with other recent works, such as Jonathan I. Israel's Radical Enlightenment, Fasolt's argument appears to be part of a significant revision in our understanding of late-seventeenth- and early-eighteenth-century intellectual history, one that may well stimulate renewed interest in Conring.
