Herman W. Nickel

Herman W. Nickel (born 23 October 1928) was U.S. Ambassador to South Africa during the Reagan administration. He was born in Berlin,Germany. President Reagan announced his intention to nominate Nickel for the post on 24 February 1982. Nickel was sworn in on April 6, succeeding the incumbent, William B. Edmondson, and preceding Edward Perkins (the first African-American U.S. Ambassador to South Africa, also born in 1928) in 1986. Nickel was a correspondent for the NY Times prior to his appointment.
