Description

One of the 11 triple expansion reciprocating steam engines built by the Joshua Hendy Iron Works as powerplants for the cargo ships produced by the Western Pipe and Steel Company of California on behalf of the U.S. Shipping Board in World War I. Each engine weighed about 137 tons and stood 24 1/2 feet high. Essentially the same engine design was used by the Hendy Iron Works for the mass production of Liberty ship engines in World War II.
