Henry M. Margolis was a New York industrialist, theatrical producer, and philanthropist.
Henry Margolis was born November 2, 1909 on New York's Lower East Side. Worked his way through City College of New York and New York University Law School. Admitted to NY Bar. Invested in hotels and property in New York City and New Jersey.
Married Nexhmie Zaimi in the 1940's, one son, Eric Margolis. Re-married in the 1950's to Irene Broza. Part owner of New York's finest French restaurant, Le Cafe Chambord.
Originated credit card concept with his company, `Dine and Sign.' Widely admired for his financial acumen, quick mind, strong character and refined tastes.
Broadway theatrical producer, sometimes with actor Martin Gabel: "The Hidden River", "Once More With Feeling", "Tiger at the Gates" and "The Reclining Figure".
With Orson Welles, he produced and staged King Lear in New York and Moby Dick in New York and London.
Chairman of the Elgin National Watch Company. Later, Chairman of Aero-Flow Dynamics Corp, and Jamieson Laboratories of Canada. Founding director of the Magnum photo coop with friends David Seymour (`Chim') and Robert and Cornel Cappa. Founding director of New York's International Center for Photography and California's Pritikin Institute.
Died on his birthday in black tie at Lincoln Center, 2 Nov 1989.
