Green Lantern: The Blackest Night is a forthcoming American comic book fictional crossover event in the monthly Green Lantern titles published by DC Comics. Written by Geoff Johns, The Blackest Night follows Green Lantern: Rebirth and Sinestro Corps War as the third part of a trilogy throughout the Green Lantern comics. The storyline was first revealed at the conclusion of Sinestro Corps War and is planned for a summer 2009 release.

At the conclusion of the Sinestro Corps War, the Anti-Monitor was transported to an unspecified location. He is recognized by a dark voice that bids him rise. Too weak to resist or escape, he is engulfed by a black power battery.
The teaser continued to proclaim that "...the armies of fear and willpower must come together, because across the Universe, the dead will rise."
A rotted hand was shown coming out of the ground, with a black ring on it's finger. The logo on the ring was the insignia of Lantern villain Black Hand.[1]
In Green Lantern #28, after the Guardians of the Universe authorized lethal force against all of the Corps' enemies, Sinestro told Hal Jordan that "...they don't yet realize that instead of trying to prevent the prophecy, they should be preparing for it." He also predicted that when the Guardians realize that they can do nothing to prevent it, they will panic.
Jordan believes that Sinestro caused these events with the intent of making the Green Lantern Corps the rulers of the universe, as he was on his homeworld of Korugar. Sinestro himself has confirmed this in direct conversation with Jordan.
This issue also saw the beginning of the orange power being harnessed, which (as revealed in Green Lantern #25) is the emotional power of avarice. The Controllers, one-time rivals to the Guardians, seek this power out in an attempt to control the Lantern Corps.
The issue also saw the recruitment of the first Red Lantern, Laira. After being expelled from the Green Lantern Corps for the murder of Amon Sur, Green Man was returning her to her homeworld when the red ring found her and proclaimed: "Laira of Sector 112. You have great rage in your heart."[2]
[edit] Origin
Both Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver have stated that The Blackest Night will be the third part of a Green Lantern trilogy that began with Rebirth and continued with the Sinestro Corps War.[3] In an interview with IGN, Johns stated that he has the monthly Green Lantern book plotted up until issue #55, which (presuming there are little or no delays in the book) would come out in August of 2009.[4]
More details for the event will be in the upcoming DC Universe #0, which sets the stage for most of the DCU line in 2008-2009.[5]
