According to me, Hemingway, deificates the human being's Being in the struggle with nature. In this situation mother nature is never comprehended as an evil enemy. Both sides are the players of a game. Game of being. To be against each other is just the rule of the game, in fact both are the participants of life and being, in a wider and conceptual sense.
In a freudian point of view, one can understand that may be especially in victorian era something went wrong and human ignored a very part of himself which keep him alive throughout ancient times.
