Helen Merrill whom I have heard of and I have a book about her is a mathematician. She wrote a book titled "Mathematical Excursions", A Dover publication where she ventures into the subject of mathematical recreations and puzzles. She also has a novel way of teaching mathematics.The edition I have is dated 1957
