Nonetheless, he proved to be, in this respect, more lenient than Robespierre had been to this now-famous international literary figure:

I do wonder about the appropriateness of using 'Robespierre' in this sentence. Robespierre was not at any point a dictator like Napoleon - merely one of twelve equal members of the Committee of Public Safety. I very much doubt that he, personally, had anything to do with Helen Maria Williams being thrown into prison. Perhaps a substitute, such as 'revolutionary government of Year II,' would be better?
