[edit] generic term for unknown Star Trek technology ?

It should also be noted that the term 'Heisenberg Compenator' was used several times in the series when the bit of technology was unknown. Such an example would be when the Ferengi captured the Entprise during the Next Generation Era. Riker explained the the invading Ferengi that the Heisenberg Compensators needed be kept at a certain level or the ship would explode. I'm paraphrasing, and this does require some research, but point is, 'Heisenberg Compenator' is a generic term for unknown Star Trek technology.
