Hector De Silva

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hector "Jesse" de Silva is one of the main characters in The Mediator series written by Meg Cabot. Jesse appears in the first novel as a ghost who haunts Suze Simon's bedroom in Carmel, California. He is Suze's romantic interest and is considered a rival of Paul Slater.

[edit] Biography

Jesse was born in the early 19th century to a family of wealthy ranchers in California. He was the only male child and his mother was the one who called him "Jesse." He wanted to be a doctor but couldn't because of his responsibilities to his family.

Jesse was supposed to marry his cousin, Maria de Silva, but discovered she was being unfaithful to him with a slave trader named Felix Diego. On his way to call the wedding off, Jesse was strangled in his sleep by Felix in a boarding house in Carmel. His remains are buried in the backyard and his spirit lingers in the boarding house for 150 years, unable to move on to the next life. His family believes he deserted Maria and she eventually marries Felix.

Suze Simons moves into his bedroom in the first book and threatens to kick him out. He saves her life several times and helps with the ghosts that come to her, even though he doesn't always approve of her mediation techniques. He is exorcised in "Darkest Hour" by Jack Slater but Suze brings him back. He kisses her at the end of that book, and then tries to distance himself from her because he feels she deserves someone her friends and family can see. In the six book, "Twilight," Paul Slater goes back in time to prevent Jesse's death and Suze goes to stop him. They accidentally bring Jesse's body back to the future and his spirit is transferred back into his body when he accidently touches his leg.

Jesse is now alive and well, and attempting to go to medical school with the help of Father Dominic.

[edit] Appearance and Personality

Jesse is the quintessential tall, dark and handsome man. He has long dark hair and tan skin. His washboard abs are frequently mentioned in narration by Suze. He also has a small scar on his eyebrow, which Suze likes to think is from a fierce knife fight, but actually was caused by a dog bite.

As a true 19th century gentleman, Jesse is noble and polite. Suze describes him as the type of person who doesn't enjoy cruelty. He has a strong set of morals, as evidenced by the fact he won't go further than kissing so he can protect Suze's virtue. He does have an explosive temper when provoked. When Paul insinuates that Suze slept with him, Jesse throws him down the stairs, through a glass door and attempts to drown him. He frequently mutters to himself in Spanish when he's annoyed or angry.
