Created new article. The goal is to develop a list that is logical and conceptually clear and inclusive of all practicable approaches to building a machine to convert heat energy into mechanical energy.

There surely are many errors, omissions & inconsistencies in this list; edits, comments and suggestions for improvement are most welcome, as are names of engines that exemplify certain characteristics. This list as well as many of its components would benefit from links to other articles and other sites.

I am an engine enthusiast with a particular interest in the history of the evolution of heat engines. Developing this list is one way I'm using to get an overall perspective on this rather complex subject. KYcrank 00:22, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
