[edit] rained out 1996
Maybe the article should mention that in case of bad weather, the whole event can be rained out -- this happened in 1996:

"For the first time in its 32-year history, the annual Head of the Charles Regatta was canceled Sunday because of the strong winds accompanying this weekend's storm.
The regatta will not be rescheduled, although plans are underway to organize a smaller regatta in the near future on the same course with schools from the Boston area..."

[edit] Distance
Using google earth I carefully measured the course from the center of the BU boathouse, following the turns appropriately and locating the finish line from lines of sight on the shore, as well as using at least 100 points to draw the path of measurement, and found it to be nearly exactly 5000 yards, or 2.88 miles, which is significantly different than what the official course map says as well as this article. Any comments?
