Diagram of a phase change heat pump. Drawn in Inkscape by Ilmari Karonen.

Note that the arrows in the diagram are meant to indicate the flow of air and coolant; they do not correspond to heat flow, which in the system depicted is (generally) from right to left.

  1. Condenser coil (hot side heat exchanger)
  2. Expansion valve (gas expands, cools and liquifies)
  3. Evaporator coil (cold side heat exchanger)
  4. Compressor
  5. Red = Gas at high pressure and temperature
  6. Pink = Gas at high pressure and reduced temperature
  7. Blue = Liquid at low pressure and greatly reduced temperature
  8. Light Blue = Gas at low pressure and warmer temperature
