Talk:Hayek Society

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"from Vance" I'm added some stuff from their entry at sourcewatch.com. I know there's a bias problem with sourcewatch so I've toned down the rhetoric as well. If this keep/delete discussion is still going on, I'd vote to keep mainly because their journal has published articles by several Nobel Prizewinners.

from VfD:

Non-notable student society at the London School of Economics. Delete. --DMG413 22:32, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • Keep. That there's a society at the LSE devoted to the teaching of Hayek is something that is interesting to anyone who knows a bit about his history. As our article on him states, he was largely considered an "academic outcast" due to his opposition to Keynesianism, and he taught at the LSE. It's obscure but notable. - RedWordSmith 00:24, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)
    • That our is partly the problem. Fancruft, not notable. --Improv 21:48, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)
      • Oh, yes, and Delete. --Improv 21:49, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete. As RedWordSmith admits, it's vanity. (Note: There's already an article on Hayek himself.) Jongarrettuk 01:04, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)
    • Huh? How exactly did you get "vanity" out of my comments? The "our" in my comment refers to Wikipedians, and is referencing the same article you note paranthetically. - RedWordSmith 01:38, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete. Non-notable; if anything was even salvageable about this society, it can go on the Hayek article. --Lowellian 01:48, Oct 4, 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete. I'm sympathetic, but a student group doesn't inherit notability from its namesake. Wile E. Heresiarch 14:19, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)
    • If we were talking about a Hayek Society just about anywhere else, I would agree. A Hayak Society at WSU would not be notable. A Hayak Society at Dartmouth would not be notable. A Hayak Society at the University of Chicago would not be notable. The Hayak Society at the LSE is notable, specifically because it is unintentionally symbolic of how much economics has changed in the last several decades. - RedWordSmith 17:06, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • Merge with London School of Economics, generally agree with RedWordSmith though. Wolfman 02:09, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep How will eliminating the article improve Wikipedia? LegCircus 21:46, Oct 5, 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. The question asked by LegCircus could be asked about many deletion proposals these days.Moriori 22:09, Oct 5, 2004 (UTC)
  • Merge and redirect with London School of Economics, insofar as the point is worth making, that context would make it far more clearly than a standalone article. -- Jmabel 01:09, Oct 6, 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep or merge and redirect for reasons given above. siroχo 06:00, Oct 6, 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep Might well be notable to some people.--Tomheaton 12:36, 6 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. A society at one of the most well known schools of economics, which publishes a journal. Clearly notable. Factitious 06:12, Oct 8, 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep or merge and redirect to either London School of Economics or to Friedrich Hayek. jni 06:40, 8 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. Notable Intrigue 17:47, 8 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete. Not notable - merits no more than a mention on articles about the LSE and Hayek. -- Gregg 21:54, 9 Oct 2004 (UTC)
