The Hawker Hornet was a fighter development made because of the Hawker Hart's large increase in speed over previous bombers. It was the forerunner of the Hawker Fury biplane which became the last biplane fighter of the RAF. The Hornet was initially designed to be powered by a Rolls-Royce F.XIA engine, but this was replaced with a XIS version. Provision was made for two Vickers machine guns Mk III. The first flight took place in 1929. Only one prototype was built
