Hari Narayan Apte

Hari Narayan Apte (1864-1919) is acknowledged as one of the first novelist in the of era of modern Marathi novel and of the modern Marathi short story as well. He raised the Marathi novel from the level of mere entertainment to that of a serious work of art. His first novel Madhali Sthiti is an adaptation of W.M. Reynold's Mystries of London. His first historical novel Mysoracha Wagh is based on an English novel on Tipu Sultan by Meadows Taylor. He wrote total 18 novels. His novels are read with interest even today by common readers as well as by serious students of Marathi literature. His son, Naa Ha Apte, was associated with Marathi film industry as script-writer.
'Haribhau' Apte was the founder editor of the Marathi periodical Karamnuk. His sincere, earnest, formal style set the tone for a generation and more of Marathi novelists.
