I think every scholarly article is incomplete without a linguistic notion of the explained term, therefore I recommend adding this paragraph From Britanica online under same entry:

The term hapten is derived from the Greek haptein, meaning “to fasten.” Haptens can become tightly fastened to a carrier molecule, most often a protein, by a covalent bond.
