Hannen Swaffer is Glaswegian rhyming slang for gaffer.

Hannen Swaffer was born in Lindfield, Sussex. His full name was Frederic Charles Hannen SWAFFER. The Hannen name was drawn from his mother's maiden name. The GRO civil marriage index in 1904 reports his name as Frederic C HANNENSWAFFER.
