[edit] Was she a gypsy?
Is it true, that Hannah Chaplin was a gypsy? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.78.55.211 (talk) 15:58, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
It does seem that her grandmother was a full blooded gypsy, though some sources think that Charlie Chaplin's Gypsy blood derived from his father's side. English parochial records only record the religion, in this case Anglican, not the racial origins, so there is no certain documentation. Chaplin always asserted this to be the case, and he certainly looked the part. Gypsy blood is very common in South and East London.
Another question is how did she become Hannah Resiel? She was born Hill, used the stage-name Harley, married a Chaplin, and according to some sources, died as Mrs Pedlingham.
Possibly the author is conflating one of the canards created by the McCarthyite Press about the supposed Jewish forebears of Chaplin with the real Miss Hill. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.13.29.28 (talk) 22:06, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Cane Hill or Bedlam?
It says in the "Famous patients" section of Bethlem Royal Hospital that Hanna Chaplin was committed there; However, it says nothing attributing this claim in this article, as it says here she was a patient at Cane Hill Lunatic Asylum. Which is correct? --Mizu onna sango15/水女珊瑚15 01:31, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
