Hans-Erich Voss on a mugshot taken in Soviet captivity after World War II.
This photo was taken between 1945 and 1954 and comes from an official Soviet source. Since the USSR was not a party to international copyright conventions at that time I assume it is in the public domain. Adam 07:23, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- Well, Adam, that "pre-1973" reasoning must be considered wrong (see here, here, and here). The critical cut-off year for the U.S. appears to be 1942. Please state where you got that image from, and what source (if any) is stated there. Lupo 09:27, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale
- Purpose and character of the use: To illustrate the article Hans-Erich Voss
- Nature of the copyrighted work: B/W mugshot, front and side views. Photo previously published in Vinogradov, V. K. et al.: Hitler's Death: Russia's Last Great Secret from the Files of the KGB, Chaucer Press, 2005; ISBN 1-904-44913-1. That book is a translation of the Russian original, published by Zvonnitsa Publishing House in 2000. I assume the photo was published in the Russian edition. The ultimate source of the photo is the KGB archives.
- Amount used: The image is reproduced in full, but the quality is rather poor, and it's only a thumbnail reproduction of the larger original in the book.
- Effect of the use on the potential market or value of the image: I don't think there is a market for this photograph. See also (3).

As we shouldn't use hi-res images under hair use, I have deleted that initial upload after having thumbnailed it. Lupo 11:21, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
