Talk:Halite Client
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Why is this client notable? There was a major issue recently with the buyout of utorrent (which is one of the top 3 bittorrent clients) by BitTorrent, Inc.. In P2P circles this caused a great stir due to some alleged connections of BitTorrent, Inc. with the MPAA. This has been widely discussed on all the relevant P2P forums and sites. Many utorrent users are concerned, that the closed source utorrent client could introduce backdoors of some sort to the detriment of users in the future.
In this context the question always arises, on what alternative clients are available or in development which could possibly replace the highly popular utorrent. Most frequently Halite bittorent client is mentioned, because it has low resource usage (in contrast to Azureus) and it is open source. Anyone not familiar with the discussion might conclude Halite is not notable, because it is a rather young client, but the issue is not the number of hits, rather the importance that information of Halite brings to the discussion.
It is relevant due to the current event of the recent buyout, the wide ranging discussions about the music/film industry trying to control or prohibit major P2P clients, as well as this client being one of the possible alternatives, which could grow in popularity just as utorrent has grown in the past.
As to the number of Ghits, I count more than 20.000, depending on the search terms. There are many other bittorrent clients on Wikipedia (Comparison of BitTorrent software), which have a much lower number of hits. Peterpaulw1 11:42, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
- Then you need to put some of these references in the article (reliable sources that discuss Halite Client). If it's still in an early stage of development, it's difficult to imagine its importance. ... discospinster talk 13:32, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
- I added a paragraph on importance of Halite in the P2P community & references (I'm not sure, if the syntax of the refs is right.) Also, I merged it with most of the additional content from Halite bittorrent. Hope this helps. Peterpaulw1 18:25, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
Nice to have an article about a promising young bittorrent client. But what does uTorrent have to do with it? There is more about uTorrent on this page then there is about about Halite, and the uTorrent discussion is all rumour and conjecture. The status and perspective section is full of weasel words and POV. 'Frequently' many clients are mentioned as alternatives to every other client. Neither utorrent or halite are notable in this respect. This section of the article reads like an advertisement. 24.89.255.226 00:24, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- I think that it is basically follow up to utorrent is why its mentioned (albeit too much). Its a small client, low on cpu usage. Im starting to use this client now than utorrent. darn bit-torrent mpaa fiends buying utorrent:( Fethroesforia 23:17, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
