[edit] History

Most notable for Mother Catherine McAuley founder of the Congregation of the Religious Sisters of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland, on December 12, 1831.

Mother M. Patricia Joseph Waldron brought the Sisters of Mercy to Philadelphia in August of 1861. The Academy of the Sisters of Mercy officially opened on Spring Garden Street in the parish of the Assumption. Two years later the school was moved to a private residence at the corner of Broad Street and Columbia Avenue.

In 1947, the Sisters of Mercy bought the Taylor Estate on Sumneytown Pike in Gwynedd Valley. The Academy then moved from Philadelphia and occupied various buildings on the campus until a new Academy building was finished in 1955. [1]

[edit] Academics

The student body of the Elementary Division is composed of approximately 470 boys and girls from kindergarten through grade 8. The faculty includes Sisters of Mercy and lay faculty members. In 2007, Gwynedd-Mercy Academy was named a Nationally Recognized Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. Academic excellence is achieved through continuous curriculum development, ongoing teacher training and differentiated instruction. Beyond the curriculum, there are many opportunities for students to excel in areas of special interest. Gwynedd-Mercy Academy sponsors a Mathlete Team, an annual Science Fair, Reading Olympics teams, and the National Junior Honor Society. In a testament to academic excellence, over the last five years, 20% of 8th grade graduates have been awarded academic scholarships to prestigious private high schools.
