Guy Gartland

Friar Guy Gartland, CM, (1928-2005), born Clayton James Gartland in Tweed, Ontario, Canada. A Franciscan Friar of the Atonement who devoted his life to service. He received the habit in 1947, professed his first vows in 1949, and his final vows in 1952. For his work, he was distinguised with many citations from local and national governments.

Named procurator to the Friar's house in Washington, DC. At Montour Falls he served as procurator until 1960 when he was assigned to St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Richmond, British Columbia, Canada and contributed much to the development of area youth programs, particularly among high school and university students. In 1974, he returned to Graymoor where he worked at St. Christopher's Inn before serving as the administrator of the friary in Washington, DC. In 1983, he returned to Western Canada, where he served at Christ the King Parish, Oliver, B.C. In 1985 he was the administrator of the friars' house at Waverly Place, NYC. In 1986, he moved to Ontario, where he worked for Covenant House, Toronto. He later he worked with youth in Prince of Peace Parish, Scarborough, Ontario until his death.

Friar Guy is a member of the Order of Canada. He was honored by Queen Elizabeth II for the medal For Service to the Nation in recognition for his youth work in 1967. He was similarly honored in 1974 Canadian Prime Minister, Pierre Elliot Trudeau with a citation For Service to Youth.
