Gusuku (御城 castle?), or just suku (城 castle), is the Okinawan word for "castle" or "fortress." In standard Japanese, the kanji 城 is pronounced "shiro". Many gusuku and related cultural remains in the Ryūkyū Islands have been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
