Gursharan Kaur

Gursharan Kaur is the wife of the Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh. She is the daughter of Sardar Chattar Singh Kohli and Sardarni Bhagwanti Kaur. She married Dr. Manmohan Singh at Amritsar in 1958. She is known in the Sikh community of Delhi for her kirtan performances[citation needed]. Even before their marriage she used to sing on the radio. Later she took regular classes and learned classical music.
Since her husband has become Prime Minister, she has accompanied him on tours around the world. Her three daughters - Upinder Singh, Damandeep Kaur, and Amrit Singh have all been quite successful in their careers. While Upinder is a Professor of History at the University of Delhi, having earlier headed the History Department at St. Stephen's College, Amrit who has studied at Cambridge works as a lawyer for a non-profit organisation in New York.
