Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti (born in Watford) is an award-winning British, Sikh dramatist, journalist and actress. She has written for the stage and the soap operas EastEnders, Westway and Crossroads.
In 2003, she was nominated for a Race in the Media Award in the radio music/entertainment category for North East South West.
Her second play, Behzti (meaning Dishonour) depicted murder and sex abuse in a Sikh temple. After violent protests against the play by Sikh groups on 18 December 2004 the Birmingham Repertory Theatre controversially cancelled the play - death threats reportedly forced Bhatti to go into hiding. It won her the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, a US-based award of $10,000, made annually to the best English language play by a woman.
Bhatti studied moern languages at Bristol University and trained as a writer at the Birmingham Rep. She lives in London with her partner, actor/ director Michael Buffong and is related the footballer/boxer/singer Gurps Bains.
