Talk:Gummo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I think the incident in the film where the two boys have sex with the retarded prostitute is quite worth mention. Especially since her sister was the pimp. Very disturbing... *shivers*
why was this supposedly named after gummo marx? (i havnt seen this movie but im still curious. coincidentally i saw it yesterday in a movie store. im a marx brothers fan, and i found my way to this page today, because of that.)
- Gummo Marx is relatively unknown and had the lousy luck of quitting before the act became famous. Xenia is likewise little-known and unlucky. At least, that's my guess; I could be talking out of my ass. 152.163.100.139
- Xenia is not exactly unknown, considering that it's the county seat of a midsize county in Ohio. It's also nowhere near as disgusting as it's portrayed in the movie. In reality it's a nice, fairly modern town. --24.209.94.17 12:25, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
I'm tempted to just get rid of the following paragraph:
The movie is admittedly hard to watch but like other controversial movies that fact alone should not render it meritless. The difficulty results from the seemingly vague distinction between fiction and reality. There appear to be actual interviews intermingled with an rambling pointless story that is representative of the stuttered malaise of reality. Most lives are not clearly refelcted by Don Quixote or Forrest Gump in which life needs an invented purpose or continually is revealed as beautiful through chance encounters as the catalyst for redemption. The unsettling idea is that in some capacity this activity may exist and that inherently is terrifying. The idea that a childs abandonement could result in a lumbering drive to attain glue to sniff, a friends mentally disabled sister with which to have sex, or to determine the actuality of a competitors suspected homosexuality. The film is crippling in its depiction of the baseness of life an antipodal view against the ladled sentiment present in romantic comedies, situation comedies, or greeting cards. Often when driving clapboard homes and trailer parks stream by eliciting musings on the experience of the inhabitants. It is hard after watching Gummo to not be prepossessed by the stark abuse befallen these people levied by circumstance and their own impotence and the resultant acceptance of base direction.
It's basically original research and the editors own opinion/interpretation of the movie. I'll wait a few days before deleting it in case anybody objects. 207.6.31.119 03:38, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
Has anyone out there any information about this film's DVD-release? Is it released? It so damn hard to get a hold of. -Karsten
I just saw it at blockbuster today but decided to get party monster instead, but after reading this page im not sure i wanna see it.
Which Xenia is this film supposed to be set in, Clay-county-Xenia or Logan-county-Xenia (now Atlanta)? Neither of those is a county seat, and I can't find info about the tornado on either Wiki entry. Also, some text about the tornado appears to have been removed from this article, since the first reference is to "the tornado" rather than "a tornado", and I recall there used to be a mention that Korine shifted the date of the tornado up by a few decades for dramatic purposes. Or is Gummo set in a fictional Xenia hit by a fictional tornado? Asat 05:24, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
