Gumelemi Cay

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gumelemi Cay is a tiny island directly north of the Baker's Bay tip of Great Guana Cay in The Bahamas. The island is a sea turtle nesting ground. Loggerhead turtles, hawksbill turtles and green turtles nest on the 2 acre island.

Baker's Bay Golf & Ocean Club, which owns the island and the 600 acres adjacent to it, plans to develop the acreage into 6 lots, despite opposition from the Ocean Futures Society, Caribbean Conservation Corps and the Archie Carr Center.

Jean-Michel Cousteau wrote in 2006, "...the Bakers Bay Golf and Ocean Club development may undermine the environmental health of the region; specifically affecting the nesting sea turtles of Gumelemi Cay..."
