Gulf Island Film Television School is a film school located on Galiano Island.
The school provides training for people ages 12 and up in film, including animation, live-action, and visual effects. Gulf Island Film and Television School (GIFTS) offers weekend, week, two week, and month long sessions. Its most popular program is the 'Media Intensive Program which is offered to all ages. The Independant Media Producers program is a month-long program for adults, with a prerequisite of MIP. GIFTS is also offering a new program, a two week Youth Directors' Program, which is designed to give youth more control over their videos.
The age groups specified by GIFTS are Early Teen (ages 12-14), Youth (ages 14-18), and Adult (ages 18+). GIFTS was originally created for Youth, so most of the summer programs are designed for Youth, with one Early Teen program for the year. Adult programs are offered for the rest of the year.
GIFTS offers a unique experience because instead of giving out written instruction sheets, it provides many mentors for the students, who help them understand the creative and technical aspects of filmmaking, while still letting the students' creative vision shine through. The Mentor to Student ratio is excellent, so someone is almost always nearby if students experience a problem.
