Talk:Guinea pig breed

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This page could really use pictures of all the different varieties and preferably also different color variations too. I'm going to add a link to the main article though, since isn't Wikipedia supposed to be hypertext? (forgive me if it's not standard to "backlink" to articles, but it seemed approriate)

[edit] Requested move

Breeds is definitely an applicable term to the varieties of guinea pig, as they have distinct traits that breed true. Also, it is simpler and more in line with the titling of such pages as Dog breed and Cat breed. Even if this move doesn't happen, for grammar reasons it at least needs to be moved to Domestic varieties of guinea pig (minus the plural). VanTucky 21:28, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

I would suggest a "list" title here, either List of guinea pig breeds (seems better) or List of domestic varieties of guinea pig. Dekimasuよ! 06:45, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
The article is not actuall a list, nor is it intended to be one. it is just like the dog and cat articles above. also, there aren't any more breeds than what is in the article already, so there's no room for list style expansion. VanTucky 04:58, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
You moved the article before the request was closed, but you forgot to remove the plural. Suggest that this at least be closed with a move to Guinea pig breed. Dekimasuよ! 13:26, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
There are actually more breeds than you originally listed. The latest frontier in guinea pig breeding seems to be different curly haired breeds.Salanaland (talk) 23:21, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] New formatting and expansion

In an effort to get this article to GA status, I've slowly adding images and making improvements. However, when I started out to initially expand the breeds individually, I found it a daunting task. In current format, there are multiple listings for the same breeds (of different name depending on region). In order to have comprehensive listings for each breed that doesn't repeat content or leave some inadequate, I am trying a new format with one area for each breed. Each section can still mention different names and judging standards for individual breeds (i.e. Sheltie/Silkie) without getting into ine POV too heavily. For now, I named the Self/American/English breed as simply short haired to avoid a POV. I also leaned a bit heavily on the Australian National Cavy Council's standard, as they freely publish their standards book. The British and Americans do not, so I will trying to get those soon (even if I have to buy them). I also want to add sections on scientific strains and the meat production breed. Let me know what you think of the new look and additions, VanTucky Talk 20:13, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Self is not a breed (hair texture/length) but a variety (solid color). You can have self black Americans, self red Abyssinians, self cream Peruvians, self chocolate Teddies, etc. I am not a breeder but I've read a lot about guinea pig coat colors and such and consulted with some former breeders.Salanaland (talk) 23:19, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
In some countries, such as Britain, self is both a color variation and another name for short haired (i.e. American) cavies. Self simply means "same", so obviously smooth, short-coated cavies fall under that definition. VanTucky 23:22, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
The ANCC standard refers to "Self" as "English Self" in its description; plus other color varieties of short-haired pigs are named merely by their color variety (roan, himalayan, etc.). So I think the assumption in this document is that all pigs are short-haired, and any other hair type has to be specified, but that "self" is a description of a short-haired cavy, not a name for short-haired cavies. In any case, "self" in that document is applied only to self-colored animals. There is no such thing as a "Dalmatian self". I don't find the Omlet UK site definitive as it isn't sourced and isn't an official document of a show association.Salanaland (talk) 23:44, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Great Job

Wow, great job with adding so much information! That's fine that you changed it to Guinea Pig Breeds...there is definitely more information on it. I love the page so keep up the great work! --Cher <3 (talk) 20:44, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
