Aika hassuja nuo "viralliset käännökset" Asia kuitenkin on niin että Kaartin pataljoona ja Kaartin jääkärirykmentti ovat jäänteitä Suomen Vanhasta Kaartista, joka nimenomaan pitää kääntää "Old Guard of Finland".

Avainsana on vanha

Venäjän armeijassa oli tapana antaa ansioituneille joukko-osastoille Kaarti-arvonimi ja kun Kaarti vielä enemmän ansioitui, niin siitä tehtiin Vanha Kaarti.

Tuo vanha ei siis tarkoita sitä että se oli autonomian aikainen järjestelmä eli tapahtui vanhaan aikaan silloin joskus, vaan se on nimenomaan arvonimi. Samaa järjestelmää noudatettiin vielä neuvosto-aikana, jolloin rintamalla oli esim. Kaartin lento-osastoja ja muita yksiköitä.

I knew about the "Guard" title being added to units but not the "Old". Go ahead and change it! But we agree now on that the "Guard Jaeger Regiment" should be the correct translation for "Kaartin jääkärirykmentti"? -- Jniemenmaa 11:17, 4 Apr 2004 (UTC)
