View looking south over Point Cruz, Guadalcanal shows the jumble of sharp-grassed ridges, foothills and mountainous jungle which was Guadalcanal. http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USMC/USMC-M-Guadalcanal/USMC-M-Guadalcanal-1.html "A" marks the spot on October 9, 1942 where "Chesty" Puller's U.S. Marine battalion trapped a battalion from the Japanese 4th Infantry Regiment in a ravine (marked with a "B" on the map) and almost annihilated it.
