Guardian Angel Getten (まもって守護月天! Mamotte Shugogetten!?) is a manga by Minene Sakurano which ran in the monthly magazine Shōnen GanGan. The manga was adapted into an anime which was produced by Toei Animation.[1] An OVA Denshin Mamotte Shugogetten was released in 2000.
The story involves Tasuke Shichiri, a 14-year-old boy that receives a gift from his father, Tarousuke, who is traveling in China. The gift is a ring, the shitenrin, and those pure of heart may gaze into it and receive a moon goddess named Shaolin.
The manga was mysteriously discontinued after volume 11 and put on hiatus. It has since moved to another manga company and serialization has continued, under the title "Mamotte Shugogetten Retrouvailles"
A similar turn of events happened in its US adaptation via Raijin Comics. TOKYOPOP has licensed the manga under its original title and the first volume will be published in April 2008 [2]

[edit] Characters
Shaorin (守護月天 小璘 Shugogetten Shaorin?), who wears Traditional styled costumes, has little understanding of the human world after spending a few thousand years in confines of the ring. Throughout the anime her purpose is to protect Tasuke and she does so by summoning different assistants called hoshigami (星神, literally "star gods") through the ring. She initially causes trouble for Tasuke by destroying harmless household objects in her efforts to protect Tasuke. After destroying some of the school she is banned from going there. Because of this, Shaolin sends Rishuu to protect Tasuke at school. She develops feelings for Tasuke when she gets jealous When Kaori shows up in episode 12 and on the last 2 episodes, she finally realises what she feels for Tasuke
Tasuke Shichiri (七梨太助 Shichiri Tasuke?), the main character, is a highschool student, son of a globe trotting archeologist father. Because his father travels and his mother is deceased he lives alone in his two story home at the beginning of the story. He is decisive and intelligent, but nonetheless beleaguered and is a similar character to Keiichi Morisato in both personality and situation. He has a crush just after he first meets Shaorin and his feelings for her develop even more.
Keikounitten Ruuan (慶幸日天 汝昴 Keikōnitten Rūan?) is freed from a wand artifact, the kokutentou, by Tasuke, found in the same area as the ring that summoned Shaloin and sent to Tasuke by his father. Ruuan's role as opposed to Shaorin's is not to protect Tasuke but instead make him happy which she does by giving inanimate objects life to do her bidding. Ruuan and Shao are sworn rivals and conflict occurs often as their roles of keeping Tasuke "safe" or "happy" aren't always equivalent.
Rishu (離珠?) the tiny, pink-haired, telepathic hoshigami of Shaorin is given to Tasuke when he attents school. She is unable to speak at an audible volume to Tasuke so she communicates by drawing cartoons on palm cards with a paintbrush. She has a cute way of speaking. She says "deshi" instead of "desu" and calls Tasuke "Tasuke-shama".
Bannanchiten Kiryū (万難地天 紀柳?) is freed from a small Chinese fan, also sent by Tasuke's father. Her role is to put her master through trials by making things grow to several times their normal size. In the animation, she only appears in the Denshin Mamotte Shugogetten OVA.
Izumo Miyauchi (宮内 出雲 Miyauchi Izumo?) from the local Shinto shrine is in love with Shaolin. He has the cool, cheerful look whenever he is near cute girls, but has an evil look towards the boys.
Kouichirou Endou (遠藤 乎一郎 Endō Kōichirō?) and Takashi Nomura (野村 たかし Nomura Takashi?) are Tasuke's classmates. Kouichirou in love with Ruuan and Takashi is in love with Shaorin.
Kaori Aihara (愛原 花織 Aihara Kaori?) is a junior at the school which Tasuke attends. She is jealous of Shaorin and Ruuan and falls as they are rivals to win Tasuke's heart. She first meets Tasuke after she wishes to Kami (God) that she will meet the man of her dreams and she falls immediately in love with Tasuke when he saves her from tripping over.
Shouko Yamanobe (山野辺 翔子 Yamanobe Shōko?) starts out as a delinquent girl, but after befriending Shaorin, decides to bring her and Tasuke together. Her personality softens up after she meets Shaorin and it is seen that she becomes sensitive when it comes down to understanding Tasuke and Shaorin's relationship.
