[edit] Naming date
Was the island named 'Groote Eylandt' in 1623 or 1644? Renke 23:28, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
- Most sources attribute the naming to Tasman in 1644, although it was earlier visited by another dutch vessel in 1623. It had been changed from Tasman in '44 to Carstenz in 23 by an earlier anon edit; I've changed it back for now, will add a ref or two for it (quite possibly there are other refs which mention 1623, will need to be investigated further.--cjllw | TALK 06:25, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
