Grinds

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Grinds" is a Hiberno-English term for private tuition but also a major industry in Ireland. It is normally always plural, and it would be incorrect to use the word "Grind" as a verb or to refer to a single lesson.[citation needed]

Grinds in Ireland, are a major component of educational life. A normal Irish student will have many of these "grinds" before sitting the two major state exams, the junior cert and the leaving cert. Grinds is a multi million euro industry in Ireland[1] and according to the Irish Times, some 40 per cent of all full-time Leaving Cert students are paying fees averaging more than €5,000 per annum [2] in addition to their normal schooling.

The term "grinds" is much less commonly used at university/college level, where third level students would more likely use the word extra tuition.[citation needed]
