Gredil is the name of our website which is also the username for my small presence on Wikipedia:
The exact origins of the word Gredil are hard to find. It's seems to sit at the origin of words such as grid, grill, grate & crate. It was the basis for words that describe our road systems and many other things through to our information systems. My fascination with the contrast of the randomness of the natural world, with the formatted way we shape every aspect of our modern lives led me to resurrect it as the title for this internet presence. Here is a rough "official" history for those that are interested:
Pre-12th century. Old French gredil ‘gridiron’, from, ultimately, Latin cratis ‘crate’.

griddle - c.1225, from O.N.Fr. gredil, from L. craticula (see grill).

gridiron - c.1330, griderne, alteration (by association with iron) of gridire (c.1290), a variant of gridil (see griddle). Confusion of "l" and "r" was common in Norman dialect.
