[edit] Who's Mary?

Isn't there the implication that it is Mary whom he has done to death, it happened in his home town, hence they took him away to prison and execution and they will be taking him back to be buried? It does not say so explicitly, but surely it is that psychological undertone which struck a note with the public and explains why what is a somewhat mawkish and sentimental song had such a wide appeal. • I had never thought about that, but no, I don't think so. I think Mary is simply an old sweetheart.Garr1984 01:29, 3 April 2007 (UTC)§
