Why was this simply moved from Western Sydney to Greater Western Sydney? The two terms tend to describe different areas, and "Western Sydney" is the more commonly used one and most deserving of an article. JPD (talk) 13:47, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
To be clearer: the two terms don't always describe different areas, but Western Sydney is by far the most common one. I propose moving the article back to Western Sydney. If it's good enough for the Minister for Western Sydney, it's good enough for me. JPD (talk) 15:18, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
- From what I can tell also, in polite circles one says "Greater West" or "Greater Western Sydney" instead of Western Sydney. It's a language thing too.
I have never heard this distinction. "Greater" in place names is usually used simply to indicate that a larger area is being described, that is, Greater Tamworth is larger than Tamworth proper and has nothing to do with politeness. Logically this means that Greater Western Sydney is larger than Western Sydney proper. However, as I pointed out, the state government uses simply "Western Sydney" to refer to the (large!) area also covered by the Greater Western Sydney Economic Development Board. I suppose you could suggest that the state government is not "polite circles", but this official usage is good enough for me. JPD (talk) 08:47, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
