[edit] Re:Cleanup notice

The article's title is "Great Mosque of Samarra", but the text is about the city itself. The mosque is hardly mentioned. either the article needs to be merged with the article on Samarra, or someone needs to put something about the mosque! Grutness...wha? 12:52, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Mosque Bombing

Twice, users have added comments about this mosque being bombed. The Great Mosque of Samarra was not bombed. See Al_Askari_Mosque for the mosque that was actually bombed. Garrettcobb 21:50, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wrong minaret pictured?

Are you sure the minaret pictured is the famous spiral minaret in Samarra?? It looks too small, out of scale. Compare with other pictures. It rather looks like Abu Dulaf mosque (http://www.dur.ac.uk/derek.kennet/abudulaf.htm) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 83.19.70.178 (talk) 11:04, 23 January 2007 (UTC).

indeed, this picture is not the much-taller malwiya minaret of worldwide fame. 24.62.25.90 04:28, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Yes it is, I've been there more than once and it looks about right. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Maha Odeh (talkcontribs) 04:52, August 20, 2007 (UTC).

Yes the picture is incorrect it is the Abu Dulaf Mosque, It needs correcting, this is the Great Mosque of Samarra http://www.theamblerfamily.com/Spiral%20Minaret%20Samara%201974.jpg

The photo is indeed of the wrong minaret. The tower depicted is the spiral minaret at Abu Dulaf, 15 km north of Samarra. Both minarets are depicted here, side-by-side (look under 'Samarra'): http://users.ox.ac.uk/~wolf0126/photo-index.html -- Apddraig (talk) 02:18, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

There is an appropriate photo readily available in the Wikipedia Commons that should be substituted/referenced. I'd do it myself, but have little exposure to Wikipedia editing. Perhaps a more experienced editor will consider making the change. See: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:The_spiral_minaret_in_Samarra.jpg -- Apddraig (talk) 04:27, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

As per this discussion, I've switch the old image (Image:Samarraminaret.JPG, added in June 2007) with the other image (Image:The spiral minaret in Samarra.jpg). -kotra (talk) 21:35, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the edit, Kotra. I double-checked the LON/LAT on the Google Earth link, and found the current coordinates point to the center of Samarra. If the coordinates of the mosque were to be used, they would be 34°12'26"N/43°52'48"E. Should these be changed, or is it currently 'close enough' to satisfy most people? While I didn't know how to edit the image link, I'm pretty confident with the LAT/LON change (if agreeable.) -- Apddraig (talk) 23:34, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
(My apologies, I wrote Google 'Earth', but it was Google 'Maps' that most-easily demonstrates the error in lat/lon.) As evidenced here, Google Maps can readily depict the correct mosque location: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=34%C2%B012'26%22N,+43%C2%B052'48%22E&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=17&iwloc=addr
If anyone is still unconvinced about the corrected photo, the Abu Dulaf Mosque, with the smaller (prior, wrongly-depicted) minaret, is located at 34°21'43"N, 43°48'06"E, 18.5 km to the north: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=34%C2%B021'43%22N,+43%C2%B048'06%22E&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=17&iwloc=addr -- Apddraig (talk) 20:20, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
I have no problem with the new, more accurate coordinates. Good catch! -kotra (talk) 21:55, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Picture

Is it possible to transfer the photo of the minaret into international Wikipedia Commons? --Ulamm 19:21, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
