I have no opinion one way or another but wish to understand the issue.
- Is it the rendering of the coat of arms of this defunct authority that is questioned?
- Is the right to display the arms, by one other than the authority that is questioned?
- Would resaving at 200px change the issue?
To compound matters, I found this interpretation of policy.Use fair use images within templates. It seems that proving fair use is a waste of time.ClemRutter (talk) 11:42, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
- I drew this as a means to use the arms on Wikipedia. It's meant to be a free to use version of a real coat of arms (found at Image:Gtr Man arms.png)
- The arms belong to the Greater Manchester County Council, which no longer exists. Even if it did, it does not restrict or diminish the council's (copyright holders) ability to use the image, nor does it incur cost, financial or otherwise. The Collage of Arms hasn't took anyone to court for centuries, and these arms are all over the internet.
- As per civichearldry.co.uk, "I consider the arms to be in the public domain and their inclusion as fair use. I do not claim the included arms to be belong to anyone other than the local authorities as described. The images here should not be used by any other person or organisation, in such a way as to indicate they belong to themselves or imply that the local authority is connected with or endorses any product or service." We are not claiming these are our arms (which is the only crux of the issue - and these are not the original arms but a free-to-use version), but on the contrary, are using them only for the former authorities boundaries like the rest of England uses a crest or icon for theirs. -- Jza84 ยท (talk) 11:57, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

- Nice professional piece of graphics. Would it be helpful to make the statement that you are the source of this rendition, date of upload and that it is {{pd-self}}, to head off one set of bots, and take this dispute over the college of arms fair-use, use in template, userbox to Village Pump. Just a thought: doesn't heraldic case law go back to the 1300s, predating the foundation of the colony where the servers now live?ClemRutter (talk) 13:05, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
