The Greenphone was a smartphone developed by Trolltech that uses Qtopia Phone Edition, an OS comprising mostly free and open source software.

The proprietary software on the phone includes the communications stack and the package manager.[1] However, Trolltech has put these components under GPL for the next version of Qtopia, 4.3, snapshots of which are already freely available. Thus, it is now possible to run the Greenphone without any proprietary components by updating its software to Qtopia 4.3.

On October 22, 2007, Trolltech announced that it has sold all its inventory of Greenphones and will no longer continue production, having achieved the goal of promoting the Qtopia platform and gaining interest from developers. Focus will instead be shifted to development on the Neo FreeRunner phone. Trolltech intends to continue supporting the Qtopia Greenphone community[2], and alternative hardware, such as the Neo1973.
