The Greater Sudbury Police Service is the police force for Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The service is currently made up of 255 uniform staff and 102 civilians. Two K-9 officers are included in the uniform staff.
Ian Davidson replaced former police Chief Alex McCauley upon his retirement. McCauley had fought for a new police station to replace the outdated station located at 200 Larch Street. In addition to the 200 Larch Street site, detectives were located in a separate building across the street. Zannibi wanted to combine all police operations under one roof. Another concern was the safety of officers after a homemade bomb was placed outside the former Larch Street location and detonated. Eventually approval was granted for the Sudbury Regional Police to be relocated to the Tom Davies Square where all operations would be under one roof.
[edit] The Special Investigations Unit
The actions of the Greater Sudbury Police Service are examined by theSpecial Investigations Unit, a civilian agency responsible for investigating circumstances involving police and civilians that have resulted in a death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault. The SIU is dedicated to maintaining one law, ensuring equal justice before the law among both the police and the public. They assure that the criminal law is applied appropriately to police conduct, as determined through independent investigations, increasing public confidence in the police services. Complaints involving police conduct that do not result in a serious injury or death must be referred to the appropriate police service or to another oversight agency, such as the Ontario Civilian Commission on Police Services.
