Great Ayton railway station serves the village of Great Ayton in the county of North Yorkshire, England. It is located on the Esk Valley Line and is operated by Northern Rail who provide all of the station's passenger services.
The station is on a single track rail line and there are only a few trains per day. The Esk Valley railway has been voted one of the most scenic in the whole country, it is mostly passed fields, woodland, and runs a similar course for some of the journey as the River Leven.
The line was built in the 1830s to carry stone down from the quarry in what is now Newton woods. The line used to go on to Stokesley but this branch was shut as part of the post-war Beechings closures. The train arrives in the picturesque port of Whitby. The journey only takes 90 minutes from Middlesbrough to Whitby Next to great ayton station is the village garage and towing service. It is truly a a rural Yorkshire station which has by some unlnown miracle managed to escape the cruel beechings cuts of the late 1960's. Truly worth a visit!
